A student of Cabanel, Fournier obtained the Grand Prix de Rome in 1881 and exhibited at the Paris Salons, as well as receiving medals in 1889 and 1890 at the Exposition Universelle. In 1900, Fournier was medaled at the Salon and received the Legion of Honor.
He was primarily a history painter and was commissioned with numerous official State commissions, including the Insititute and the Ecole Normale, and work on the Grand Palais des Beaux Arts in Paris. Fournier's works are conserved in numerous French museums including Aix, Morlaix, Paris, Periguex, and Sens, among others.
